2008.02.17. Atlantic ChampionsTeam NB regains Tween Division title in Charlottetown

The Southeast Stingers (representing NB) captured the Atlantic Championships in the Tween divsion with a 4-2 win over archrival NS this weekend in Charlottetwon.

The 2008 Atlantic Ringette Championships were held in Charlottetown where five age divisions were contested (Petite, Tween, Junior, Belle and Open). Each age division was made up of four teams: representatives from PEI, NB and NS and a host team.

In the Tween division, the Stingers had an easy time in making it to the Championship Game by defeating PEI Host, NS and PEI respectively by scores of 12-1, 11-3 and 8-0. They knew however that team NS would come out stronger in the Finals to avenge their round robin lopsided loss to the Stingers.

And so they did.

The Championship game started well for the NB squad where they took an early 1-0 lead just 1:01 into the game (Karine from Jessica). But Team NS came back strong by scoring two quick goals (by their #17) with 12:20 and 11:25 left in the first period. The score remained 2-1 in favour of NS for the next 22+ minutes. The game was obviously very different then their previous engagement (an 11-3 round robin win by team NB): a combination of NS being much more agressive and NB not executing the same passing game.

But all was not lost! With less than 4 minutes to play, Karine passed to Camille from the offensive free pass circle, Camille penetrated the triangle and fed a nice cross crease pass to Nicole who didn't miss for a beauty of a goal (3:40 left in the game). On the ensuing play (NS free pass from the face off circle), Céline and Karine were extremely agressive and forced a turnover: Céline picked up the ring, made a beautiful pass to lead Karine on a breakaway.

Karine didn't miss.

3:28 left in the game and the Stingers are ahead by a goal. With 1:53 left on the clock, Nicole stuffed in her second of the game to essentially seal the win for the NB squad.

The SE Stingers outshot the Nova Scotia representatives from Halifax 29-24 in the Championship Game.

Print versions of team photos are available with the names of the girls and without the names (both are 10x6 inches at 300DPI, ~1MB file sizes).

Other divisions: NB teams also captured Gold in the Petite and Junior divisions and settled for Silver in the Belle and Open divisions at the 2008 Atlantic Championships.

2008.01.27. Champions, Dartmouth City of Lakes TournamentStingers win a nailbiter in OT

The Stingers were playing in the Dartmouth City of Lakes Tournament Ringette tournament over the weekend (January 24 to 27). They were part of an 8 team Junior division. They started off by defeating Cole Harbour 8-2, they then defeated Berwick 14-0 and finished off the round-robin tournament portion of the tournament by defeating perenial rivals NS Tween AA by a 5-2 margin. They faced the SE NB Tween B team in the semifinal, a game they won by a 7-1 score. They would face Chebucto in the final who had defeated NS Tween AA in the semifinal by a score of 2-1 in OT (3 of the NS Tween AA players lined up for Chebucto in that semifinal game as it is their House League team).

In the Championship Final, the Stingers came out a bit flat. After being down 2-0, the Stingers got one back just to have Chebucto go up 3-1 eight seconds later. The stingers were down 4-1 after the first period and 5-1 with less than 10 minutes left in the second period and the game.

The Stingers finally scored their second goal with 9:38 left in the game (second period). They followed up with goals at 7:20 and 6:46 showing on the clock to pull within one. Then, in a span of 22 seconds, the Stingers tied the game 5-5 (5:08), Chebucto went ahead 6-5 (4:54), and the Stingers tied again to make it 6-6 (4:46). The game went to the final seconds when Karine Doucet buried one as the buzzer was sounding … a fraction too late. Sudden death overtime. With 9:11 left in the OT, Karine fired one in to cap an individual 6 goal performance and the comeback was complete: a 7-6 overtime victory to capture the Dartmouth COLT's Junior Division.

Aside from Karine's individual performance in the final game, the whole team played tremendous throughout the weekend with great goaltending and awsome passing plays.
