Caroline's ringette teams

Caroline starting playing ringette when she was 6 years old (2001). For the past 3 years (since 2005), she has been playing on elite teams as well as house league teams (because of the limited population base, players who make elite teams in our region are also required to play on their house league teams).

2008.02.17. Atlantic ChampionsTeam NB regains Tween Division title in Charlottetown

The Southeast Stingers (representing NB) captured the Atlantic Championships in the Tween divsion with a 4-2 win over archrival NS this weekend in Charlottetwon.

The 2008 Atlantic Ringette Championships were held in Charlottetown where five age divisions were contested (Petite, Tween, Junior, Belle and Open). Each age division was made up of four teams: representatives from PEI, NB and NS and a host team.

In the Tween division, the Stingers had an easy time in making it to the Championship Game by defeating PEI Host, NS and PEI respectively by scores of 12-1, 11-3 and 8-0. They knew however that team NS would come out stronger in the Finals to avenge their round robin lopsided loss to the Stingers.

And so they did.

The Championship game started well for the NB squad where they took an early 1-0 lead just 1:01 into the game (Karine from Jessica). But Team NS came back strong by scoring two quick goals (by their #17) with 12:20 and 11:25 left in the first period. The score remained 2-1 in favour of NS for the next 22+ minutes. The game was obviously very different then their previous engagement (an 11-3 round robin win by team NB): a combination of NS being much more agressive and NB not executing the same passing game.

But all was not lost! With less than 4 minutes to play, Karine passed to Camille from the offensive free pass circle, Camille penetrated the triangle and fed a nice cross crease pass to Nicole who didn't miss for a beauty of a goal (3:40 left in the game). On the ensuing play (NS free pass from the face off circle), Céline and Karine were extremely agressive and forced a turnover: Céline picked up the ring, made a beautiful pass to lead Karine on a breakaway.

Karine didn't miss.

3:28 left in the game and the Stingers are ahead by a goal. With 1:53 left on the clock, Nicole stuffed in her second of the game to essentially seal the win for the NB squad.

The SE Stingers outshot the Nova Scotia representatives from Halifax 29-24 in the Championship Game.

Print versions of team photos are available with the names of the girls and without the names (both are 10x6 inches at 300DPI, ~1MB file sizes).

Other divisions: NB teams also captured Gold in the Petite and Junior divisions and settled for Silver in the Belle and Open divisions at the 2008 Atlantic Championships.

2008.01.27. Champions, Dartmouth City of Lakes TournamentStingers win a nailbiter in OT

The Stingers were playing in the Dartmouth City of Lakes Tournament Ringette tournament over the weekend (January 24 to 27). They were part of an 8 team Junior division. They started off by defeating Cole Harbour 8-2, they then defeated Berwick 14-0 and finished off the round-robin tournament portion of the tournament by defeating perenial rivals NS Tween AA by a 5-2 margin. They faced the SE NB Tween B team in the semifinal, a game they won by a 7-1 score. They would face Chebucto in the final who had defeated NS Tween AA in the semifinal by a score of 2-1 in OT (3 of the NS Tween AA players lined up for Chebucto in that semifinal game as it is their House League team).

In the Championship Final, the Stingers came out a bit flat. After being down 2-0, the Stingers got one back just to have Chebucto go up 3-1 eight seconds later. The stingers were down 4-1 after the first period and 5-1 with less than 10 minutes left in the second period and the game.

The Stingers finally scored their second goal with 9:38 left in the game (second period). They followed up with goals at 7:20 and 6:46 showing on the clock to pull within one. Then, in a span of 22 seconds, the Stingers tied the game 5-5 (5:08), Chebucto went ahead 6-5 (4:54), and the Stingers tied again to make it 6-6 (4:46). The game went to the final seconds when Karine Doucet buried one as the buzzer was sounding … a fraction too late. Sudden death overtime. With 9:11 left in the OT, Karine fired one in to cap an individual 6 goal performance and the comeback was complete: a 7-6 overtime victory to capture the Dartmouth COLT's Junior Division.

Aside from Karine's individual performance in the final game, the whole team played tremendous throughout the weekend with great goaltending and awsome passing plays.

The Stingers defeated Team Northeast by a score of 6-2 to capture the title of Team NB (Tween division). They had earlier (2007.12.08) defeated the same team by a score of 5-2 in the best of 3 NB playdowns to determine the team that will represent NB in the Atlantic Championships and the Eastern Canadian Championships. The Stingers participated in their first tournament of the season this weekend. They defeated Nova Scotia in the Championship Game by a score of 5-2.

Earlier in the day, the Stingers played Nova Scotia in their last round robbin game of the tournament. In that game, the Stingers were down 3-1 with 5 minutes left in the game and 3-2 with under a minute left. They then scored two goals in 21 seconds, the first coming with 27 seconds left in regulation time (Karine) and the second coming with 6 seconds left on the clock (Camille) to win a close one by a 4-3 score. Earlier in the tournament, the Stingers tied the Northeast NB team (3-3), defeated the Southeast NB "B" team (11-2) and defeated Prince Edward Island (9-1).

2007.04.08. Tween Eastern Canadian ChampionshipsTeam NB captures SILVER medal, Ontario captures Gold

The Tween Eastern Canadian Championships are contested each year between provincial champions from Ontario, Québec, NB, NS and PEI. It is the pinnacle for the Tween age group as no national event is held in canadian ringette until the next age group up (Junior level, 14/15 year olds). This year, Charlottetown very ably hosted the Championships that included Saint-Julie (representing Québec), Ottawa (representing Ontario), Halifax (representing Nova Scotia), our own NB Southeast region (representing New Brunswick) and two teams from Prince Edward Island (the Provincial team and the host team).

The NB team started off the tournament by defeating the host PEI team in a very lopsided game (~20-0). They were then awakened by a big and strong Québec team who came out on top by a 9-5 margin. The score however was not reflective of the game as team NB outshot Québec but struggled defensively. NB rebounded with wins of 7-4 against Ontario, 3-2 against old rivals Nova Scotia and 8-2 against team PEI. The NB team tied for first overall in the round robin portion of the tournament but Québec was awarded first place based on the tiebreaking scenario. The four teams making the playoffs were 1. Québec, 2. NB (both with 4-1 records), 3. Nova Scotia and 4. Ontario (both with 3-2 records, NS finishing 3rd on tiebreaking rules). In a rematch of Atlantic Championship Finalists, NB got their revenge by beating NS 4-2 to advance to the finals against Ontario who handily defeated Québec by a 7-3 score. Of note, at one point during the NB / NS semi final, the shots on goal were 16-1 in favour of NB who dominated throughout the game.

The Championship Game was a toss up: as a matter of fact, most present at the tournament felt that any of the four top teams could have emerged champion. But Ontario did.

Ontario went up by a score of 1-0 but NB tied within 10 seconds of that goal (both came about midway through the first period). Ontario then went up on a much disputed goal (ring taken from the crease, which is not allowed in ringette). NB tied the game before the end of the first period. Early in the second and final period, NB took their first lead but Ontario very quickly equalized. After a final period that was every bit as exciting as the first, the teams were deadlocked at 3 and a sudden death overtime period was needed to determine the eventual champion. Ontario scored after about 5 minutes of play in the overtime.

It is the second year in a row that the NB Southeast Tweens (representing NB) lose the Eastern Championships Finals in overtime to an Ontario team (NB was the 2005 Champion).

The girls of the NB Southeast team were simply fantastic and fun to watch all year. In the EC Championship Finals against Ontario, the whole team showed up (from the goalie, to the defense to the forwards and the coaching staff) against a faster opponent. NB was outshot in this game 40-19 (a major reversal from the round robin game against Ontario where NB was the more dominant team). But to their credit, Ontario provided constant pressure with speed and came prepared for this encounter. The shots on goal differential is also indicative of the fact that the NB squad was forced to kill off several penalties throughout the game, including a few 5 on 3's (where at one point, 3 NB players were in the penalty box at the same time).

The girls gave it their all throughout the year and came short of being crowned Atlantic Champions by an overtime goal and Eastern Canadian Champions by another overtime goal. Needless to say, their parents are all extremely proud of them.

As an aside, the Easter Sunday games (bronze and gold medal games) were both delayed by about four hours due to an overnight snowstorm that dropped over 30 cm of snow throughout the region.

Print versions of team photos are available with the names of the girls and without the names (both are 10x6 inches at 300DPI, ~1MB file sizes).

2007.02.11. Atlantic ChampionshipsThe NB tween team captures SILVER medal

In a surprising upset (to say the least :-), team Nova Scotia beat Caroline's team (team New Brunswick) in the finals of the Atlantic Championships. The NB team had tied the game 3-3 with 4.4 seconds left in regulation time but lost in sudden death overtime against the Nova Scotia team. Credit where credit is due, team NS played a tremendous game (in four previous meetings this year, including a round-robin game in this tournament, the NB team had come out on top by scores of 6-2, 8-3, 8-4 and 6-3). Onward to the Eastern Championships where hopefully team NB will get their revenge.

In round-robin play, team NB had won their three games by scores of 11-1, 6-3 and 7-0 against team PEI, team NS and the host NS team respectively to earn a spot in the championship game against NS (who narrowly earned their spot by beating team PEI by a score of 4-3).

Three side notes. 1) This was the first loss of the year for the NB team against opponents of their age group. 2) Other than the Tween age group, all other NB representatives emerged Champions in the 2007 Atlantics. 3) Assistant Coach Sue D.'s team (she's the goaltender) won the open division in overtime.

2007.01.20. New Brunswick ChampionsSoutheast Tweens WIN by default

The Southeast Tweens were crowned New Brunswick Champions today. In December, the SE Tweens had defeated the Northeast/Captial Region Tweens by a score of 16-1 (in Moncton) in the first of a best of three playdown series to determine the NB champions. After several failed attempts to schedule the second game before the Jan. 20th deadline, the NE/CR region were forced to forfeit (and thus concede the NB crown to the SE team).
